I just spent two days participating in the portfolio reviews at Karuizawa Foto Fest, which is currently being held in Karuizawa.
I’ve participated in portfolio reviews twice before—once in Arles, France, and once in Houston, Texas—but the criticism I received back then was so harsh that it left me with deep emotional scars. I decided to participate this time hoping to somehow shake off those feelings. For me, just participating was scary, so it took a lot of courage.
The lineup of reviewers was truly impressive; over the two days, I received feedback from ten different reviewers.　While it feels good to receive kind and generous feedback from friends and acquaintances, the sincere opinions of those who truly understand the world of photography provide valuable inspiration for the direction of my work. I feel like I’ve finally overcome my fear of reviews. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the ten reviewers who gave me such wonderful advice. Their feedback has further strengthened my resolve to create even more work. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Karuizawa Foto Fest for organizing this event.

現在軽井沢で開催中のKaruizawa Foto Festのポートフォリオレビューに2日間参加してきました。
フランスのアルル、アメリカのヒューストンで過去に２回ポートフォリオレビューに参加しましたが、その時にいただいた批評があまりに悪く、トラウマ的感情が強く、それをなんとか拭い去りたい気持ちで参加しました。参加すること自体が怖く、とても勇気が入りました。

あまりにも贅沢なレビューアーさんたち、2日間で10名のレビューアーにレビューして頂きました。　友人、知人からもらえる甘く寛大な評価は気持ちいいですが、やはり、写真の世界を熟知している方達からの厳しくも的確な意見は、自分の作品づくりの方向性に良い刺激を与えてくれます。　レビュー恐怖症も解消できた気がします。　素晴らしいアドバイスをくださった10名のレビューアーさま、どうもありがとうございました。　頂きましたアドバイスを生かし、もっともっと作品を作って行こうという気持ちがさらに強くなりました。このようなイベントを開催してくださったKaruizawa Foto Festに心からお礼申し上げます。

Title: Beyond Obsolescence
•
Film was once expected to become obsolete with the rise of digital photography, yet it continues to evolve. This work combines discontinued and current film stocks, arranged as sixty-four 35mm rolls in an 8×8 grid. Using water-transfer processes referencing Polaroid techniques, the images are transferred onto watercolor paper, reflecting the transformation and persistence of film as a medium.

現代の写真表現はフィルムからデジタルへと移行し、多くのフィルムが生産終了となった。フィルムは一度は過去の技術になると考えられていたが、現在流通しているフィルムは新たな表現の可能性を示している。
かつてフィルムは粒子の細かさや色再現性といった精度を重視されていたが、現在では粗い粒子や独特な色味、映画的な質感など、かつて欠点とされた要素が積極的に選ばれている。フィルムは再現のためのメディアから、表現のためのメディアへと変化しつつある。
本作では、発売中止となったフィルムと現在販売されているフィルムを組み合わせ、64本の35mmフィルムロールを8×8のグリッドとして配置。各イメージは水転写によって水彩画用紙へと転写されている。
これらの技法はフィルム時代のアナログ作業へのオマージュとして取り入れている。過去の技法を現在の制作に接続することで、フィルムというメディアの変化と持続を示している。

I'm uploading the photo that won the Jurors’ Commendation Award at the Karuizawa Foto Fest. After being notified that I had won the Jurors’ Commendation Award, the chief curator Naoko Ota made a wonderful suggestion: "How about exhibiting your work as silver halide photographs?" Of course, my answer was yes! I rushed to my darkroom to make the prints. With the submission deadline approaching, the time I spent printing in the darkroom was simply pure bliss. I love printing photographs on paper. And, in the case of black and white photographs like this one, I like the prints created by the old-fashioned darkroom process called silver halide photography the most. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of photography as a technique. If you have the opportunity to visit Karuizawa and have the time, I would love for you to see the work in person. The Karuizawa Foto Fest will be held in town until May 31st. My work is currently on display at the Old Karuizawa Hotel Otowa no Mori.

Karuizawa Foto Festで審査員特別賞をいただいた写真をアップします。　審査員特別賞を受賞したという連絡いただいたあと、キュレーターの太田菜穂子さんから、「銀塩写真で展示してみたらどうでしょう」というとても素晴らしいご提案をいただきました。　急いでネガを作り、プリント作りに暗室へ。　提出期限が迫る中、暗室でプリントしている時間は、幸せの一言に尽きました。　写真は紙にプリントするのが好きです。　そして、今回のように白黒写真の場合、銀塩写真と呼ばれる昔ながらの暗室での作業で生まれたプリントが最も好きです。　今年は写真という技法が生まれて200年目の記念の年。　もし、軽井沢にお越しになる機会があってお時間が許すのなら、ぜひ作品を直接見ていただきたいです。　Karuizawa Foto festは、５月３１日まで町内で開催されます。　そして、僕の作品は旧軽井沢ホテル音羽の森で展示中です。
